Volunteer Legal Assistant for The Nature Conservancy

Volunteer Legal Assistant

Description of Organization’s Work: The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

The Nature Conservancy is currently seeking two Spanish- and/or Portuguese-speaking undergraduate or graduate students with at least two years of college education for its Legal Volunteer Program. Volunteer Legal Assistants will work in The Nature Conservancy Worldwide Office Legal Department for the Fall semester, Spring semester, or the Summer. The unpaid positions are full- or part-time (minimum 20 hours per week) during the semester, and full-time (minimum 28 hours per week) during the summer. The Conservancy encourages students to work with their school programs to earn academic credit or develop research topics applicable to the Volunteer’s curriculum.

The Volunteers will be expected to work on one or two major projects, and to provide much of their own administrative support. This position entails working with the Legal Assistants and Legal Counsel supporting the Conservancy’s work in countries of the Caribbean and Latin America on a variety of projects, including research and writing on assigned topics. These projects will give Volunteers valuable experience in the work of a non-profit legal department including: computer research and memoranda writing. During this experience, Volunteers will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of environmental land protection abroad. Some research material and documentation may be in Spanish or Portuguese; therefore, a strong comprehension of the Spanish or Portuguese language is required.

Aside from the major projects, Volunteers will also work on short, unscheduled assignments. Generally, these assignments are the result of unanticipated issues that have arisen and need prompt attention. In such cases, the Volunteers may need to do some research into the problem and provide a short summary of the findings. Various administrative tasks will also be assigned, ranging from filing and copying to taking documents for authentication to various consulates and the State Department.

The Legal Volunteer Program provides valuable experience in many areas and can be an excellent foundation for future non-profit or legal work. The Legal Department at The Nature Conservancy offers a friendly and cooperative atmosphere in which to work. Volunteers will find that their supervisors and coworkers are accessible and helpful. Volunteers will have an opportunity to interact with staff supporting the Conservancy’s work in the Caribbean and Latin America on a daily basis and may find themselves working on projects for several of them before the semester or summer is over.

Applications are accepted year-round. Availability of Volunteer positions varies. To be considered for a Volunteer position, please send resume, cover letter, and brief writing sample as well in-advance as possible. The Conservancy is located in Arlington, Virginia, and is accessible by the Metro Orange line (Ballston stop) and several bus routes.

Please email a resume, cover letter and brief writing sample to: Amanda Sennert at asennert@tnc.org.

ACDI/VOCA is now in its first year of a five year USAID Title II food security program in Haiti. Organization Profile

ACDI/VOCA is a private, nonprofit international development organization with 45 years of expertise in technical assistance, market development, capacity building and training in developing countries and emerging democracies. ACDI/VOCA is currently active in over 40 countries worldwide. Under Title II programs in Rwanda, Uganda and Cape Verde, ACDI/VOCA has been addressing the root causes of food insecurity and focusing on sustainability of interventions.

In Cape Verde, ACDI/VOCA has empowered local organizations to construct soil and water conservation works that contribute to agricultural productivity, improve the diets of food-insecure groups by increasing the availability of locally grown fruits and vegetables under appropriate technologies; provided low-income families access to quality microcredit services; and promoted the capacity of local organizations to act as developmental catalysts in their communities. In Rwanda, ACDI/VOCA has promoted agribusinesses, rehabilitated natural resources and improved access to markets through road rehabilitation. ACDI/VOCA has worked to help farmers restore and protect farmland, and promoted crops that are economically appealing to farmers while protecting the natural resource base. ACDI/VOCA has focused on increasing the production of high-quality, shade-grown coffee with a special emphasis on the importance of linkages in the production and marketing chain. Cooperatives have received training to strengthen their business skills and are linked with local banks. In Uganda, ACDI/VOCA has worked throughout the country on food security, agricultural and health initiatives, thereby raising the quality of life for some of Uganda’s most vulnerable populations.

ACDI/VOCA has considerable expertise in the kinds of crops, such as cacao and coffee, that are critical to Haitian smallholder farmer livelihoods and that can reduce environmental vulnerability.

Within ACDI/VOCA, the Food Security and Specialty Crops portfolio has extensive expertise managing Title II and USDA food aid programs and has managed over 900,000 metric tons (MT) of commodity for monetization and direct distribution. In Rwanda and Uganda, ACDI/VOCA has acted as the lead monetizer of Title II vegetable oil utilizing the small-lot sales method. These auctions supply a scarce food commodity and facilitate the reemergence of small-trader activity and an open, competitive market.

Volunteer opportunity in Costa Rica

Correos
Labriegos Intercultural Exchange and Volunteer Center

Our Community

The Labriegos Intercultural Exchange and Volunteer Center is located in the community of Tabarcia, in the county of Mora, about an hour from the capital city of San José in Costa Rica. The community has all basic services, including a clinic, potable water, telephones, internet, public transportation, and schools.

As a rural community, the residents have long dedicated themselves to farming, even before Spanish settlement when local indigenous peoples gave the valley the name of Tabarcia, which means “land between waters.” The name alludes to the beautiful rivers, rapids, and waterfalls that cross the valley and give much pleasure to locals and visitors.

In Tabarcia, you can appreciate the authentic value of a small community, focused around the town center. There are “pulperias”, small markets that serve as a place for young people to spend their afternoons and community members to chat with each other; the beautiful and historic Catholic church, and the central park, which is a place for families to bring their children to enjoy the afternoon sun and for sporting events and soccer on the weekends. Residents still value many of their traditions, especially in food, which is kept alive and vibrant through an exchange of food and recipes with visitors.

In all parts of the community, nature can be seen everywhere: the cool, green climate allows farmers to grow all kinds of delicious fruits and vegetables, and nature herself to grow hundreds of colors and varieties of flowers, unique and colorful birds, butterflies of all sizes, and many indigenous animal species.

Our Project

The goal of Labriegos is to keep alive these traditions and values: love, respect, solidarity, and cooperation. These are the values we would like to share with you, and the reason we invite you to be a part of this volunteer program, sharing with Costa Rican families and collaborating in building gardens and traditional kitchens, in bettering the roads and bridges, and cleaning up the watershed to improve the life of the community.

As well, you will have the opportunity to learn Spanish through classes and through practice in the community as another way to grow and to serve.

Labriegos is a project born of living experience with visitors, and a desire to share our values with you. We want to share the customs of Tabarcia and of Costa Rica and to prevent language from being a barrier to those who want to share and to help the global community. We want to create an unforgettable experience, in which every moment will be one of learning and living fully in community with the families you stay with, with children and youth, with the places you visit, and with those who receive your help.

We have developed programs in environmental education and human and personal development, worked with schools to teach environmental responsibility to students with disciplinary concerns, collaborated with the Family Businesses Association on rural community tourism, and partnered with the United Nations University for Peace to give students hands-on experience in sustainable development. We have also hosted students from many international universities.

Mission: To provide an opportunity to interact with Costa Rican culture through volunteer experience with the added value of the Spanish language.

Vision: To be the leaders in the exchange of cultural experiences, in volunteerism, and in the learning of Spanish through interactive techniques.

Objective: To teach about Costa Rican traditions through the exchange of languages and experiences while engaging in volunteer activities.

Sample Schedule

Arrival: A bilingual guide will meet you at the airport to orient you to San Jose and to put you on the right bus to Tabarcia.

Welcome Activity: Students will see the school facility, meet the families with whom they will be staying, and enjoy games with the families.

First Day of Work: Students will be introduced to local and family customs, some safety rules, and some training and background in the work they will do so that the volunteer project develops as best it can.

Monday and Tuesday: Spanish class from 8a.m. to noon, afternoon free to spend with families.

Wednesday: Class in Costa Rican culture and history from 8a.m. to noon, afternoon free to spend with families.

Thursday and Friday: Volunteer activities from 8a.m. to noon, with free afternoons.

Other Activities:
-Visit the city of Puriscal to practice Spanish, to shop in the local stores and farmers market, and eat in local restaurants.
-City Tour of San José, including important and historical buildings.
-Rural Community Tourism experience with the Family Businesses Association to learn about the local environment and economy.

Graduation: A ceremony with the families celebrating the completion of the volunteer project and the course.
