Green Corps opportunity

Green Corps is looking for college graduates who are ready to take on the biggest environmental challenges of our day.

In Green Corps’ year-long paid program, you’ll get intensive training in the skills you’ll need to make a difference in the world. You’ll get hands-on experience fighting to solve urgent environmental problems — global warming, deforestation, water pollution and many others — with groups such as Sierra Club and Food and Water Watch. And, when you graduate from Green Corps, we’ll help you find a career with one of the nation’s leading environmental and social change groups.

For more information, read below or visit our web site: www.greencorps.org.

In your year with Green Corps:
You’ll get great training with some of the most experienced organizers in the field: Green Corps organizers take part in trainings with leading figures in the environmental and social change movements: people such as Adam Ruben, political director of MoveOn.org, and Bill McKibben, author and organizer of the “350.org” rallies for climate action.

You’ll get amazing experience working on environmental issues across the country: Green Corps sends organizers to jumpstart campaigns for groups such as Rainforest Action Network, Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Food and Water Watch and Environment America in San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and dozens of other places in between.

You’ll have a real impact on some of the biggest environmental problems we’re facing today: Green Corps organizers have built the campaigns that helped keep the Arctic safe from drilling, that led to new laws that support clean, renewable energy, that convinced major corporations to stop dumping in our oceans and much, much more.

You’ll even get paid: Green Corps Organizers earn a salary of $23,750. Organizers also have a chance to opt into our health care program with a pre-tax monthly salary deferral. We offer paid sick days and holidays, two weeks paid vacation and a student loan repayment program for those who qualify.

And when you graduate from the program, you’ll be ready for what comes next: Green Corps will help connect you to environmental and progressive groups that are looking for full-time staff to build their organizations and help them create social change and protect our environment.

In the next few months, we‘ll invite 35 college graduates to join Green Corps in 2012-2013. We’re looking for people who are serious about saving the planet, people who have taken initiative on their campus or community, and people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and work for change over the long haul.

If you think you’re one of those people, visit http://www.greencorps.org/apply to submit your application to join the 2012-2013 class of Green Corps’ Field School for Environmental Organizing.

Green Corps’ year-long program begins in August 2012 with Introductory Classroom Training in Boston, and continues with field placements in multiple locations across the U.S. Candidates must be willing to relocate.

Action Against Mountaintop removal

Hello friends,

There are two important things your group can do to help end mountaintop removal this week and next week -- the first is sending a letter, on your letterhead, to Lisa Jackson asking the EPA to put an immediate moratorium on mountaintop removal permits under the Clean Water Act -- this is important, as a recent court ruling has opened up 100 new permits that would destroy over 200 miles of streams -- and the EPA has the power to stop that destruction. The letter is attached, with contact info included, feel free to adapt for your own group. It would be ideal to have the letter sent in via email or fax this week or next. Please let me know if you do send a letter in to the EPA.

The second important thing is passing forward an action alert next Tuesday, March 17th. We are having a call in day to support the 150+ citizens who will be in Washington next week lobbying for the Clean Water Protection Act HR 1310 -- if you have an action alert list, or just a list of interested people or list-servs who might have a few minutes to call in or send an email, please pass it along next Tuesday. A sample call in day email blast is attached.

It's an exciting time for those working to end mountaintop removal coal mining -- but it's also become more important to show the new administration that the grassroots outcry against mountaintop removal is more powerful than the coal lobby.

Thanks so much for all you do! Please let me know if you have any questions.

PS--Please let me know if you'll be in DC to join us for any part of the End Mountaintop Removal Week in Washington!

Thanks again for your support!

Ask Obama to Stop Blasting!

The permits have been approved and they are preparing the explosives on mountains across Appalachia.

On February 13th, the courts made a devastating decision for our mountains—The damage will be done by more than 100 permits, covering nearly 100 square miles — and filling 441 valleys. This terrible decision makes it even more urgent that Obama’s administration acts now to end mountaintop removal coal mining. Obama needs to act quickly and place a moratorium on these permits that have been opened up by the court's decision -- before these mountains are destroyed forever.

As you know, mountaintop removal coal mining is one of the most destructive practices in the United States today. Mountains are blasted apart for coal, and the debris is shoved into nearby valleys, burying hundreds of miles of our streams. Mountaintop removal damages homes, poisons water and takes away the mountain heritage that makes Appalachia a national treasure.

We are currently working with Congress at the national level to create a permanent law--The Clean Water Protection Act-- to protect our nation's waterways from mountaintop removal -- but we need immediate action from President Obama in the short term to stop the destruction.

We need your help to put a hold on this national disgrace.
Please tell the Obama Administration to block these new mountaintop removal sites before it's too late. Once our mountains are gone, they are gone forever. President Obama himself has said that "We're tearing up the Appalachian Mountains because of our dependence on fossil fuels."
Please visit http://www.ilovemountains.org/action/epa to tell Obama's administration to act today to end mountaintop removal.
