Apply Today to be a Part of Green Corps!

Early Winter Application Deadline January 22, 2013

Green Corps is looking for college graduates who are ready to take on the biggest environmental challenges of our day.

In Green Corps’ year-long paid program, you’ll get intensive training in the skills you’ll need to make a difference in the world. You’ll get hands-on experience fighting to solve urgent environmental problems — global warming, deforestation, water pollution, factory farming and many others — with groups such as Sierra Club and Food & Water Watch. And, when you graduate from Green Corps, we’ll help you find a career with one of the nation’s leading environmental and social change groups.

For more information, read below or visit our web site: http://www.greencorps.org/findoutmore.

In your year with Green Corps:

You’ll get great training with some of the most experienced organizers in the field: Green Corps organizers take part in trainings with leading figures in the environmental and social change movements: people such as Adam Ruben, political director of MoveOn.org, and Bill McKibben, author and founder of "350.org".

You’ll get amazing experience working on environmental issues across the country: Green Corps sends organizers to jumpstart campaigns for groups such as Rainforest Action Network and Environment America in San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and dozens of other places in between.

You’ll have a real impact on some of the biggest environmental problems we’re facing today: Green Corps organizers have built the campaigns that helped keep the Arctic safe from drilling, that led to new laws that support clean, renewable energy, that convinced major corporations to stop dumping in our oceans and much, much more.

You’ll even get paid: Green Corps Organizers earn a salary of $23,750. Organizers also have a chance to opt into our health care program with a pre-tax monthly salary deferral. We offer paid sick days and holidays, two weeks paid vacation and a student loan repayment program for those who qualify.

And when you graduate from the program, you’ll be ready for what comes next: Green Corps will help connect you to environmental and progressive groups that are looking for full-time staff to build their organizations and help them create social change and protect our environment.

In the next few months, we‘ll invite 35 college graduates to join Green Corps in 2013 -2014. We’re looking for people who are serious about saving the planet, people who have taken initiative on their campus or community, and people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and work for change over the long haul.

If you think you’re one of those people, visit www.greencorps.org to apply to join the 2013-2014 class of Green Corps’ Field School for Environmental Organizing.

Green Corps’ year-long program begins in August 2013 with Introductory Classroom Training in Boston, and continues with field placements in multiple locations across the U.S. Candidates must be willing to relocate.

Opportunities at Lama Foundation

Looking for a meaningful experience this summer?

The Lama Foundation, an off-grid, solar-powered intentional community in the mountains of northern New Mexico, is offering two opportunities that may be of interest to those looking to experience life a little deeper.

The first is a workshop to be held August 5-10 for people ages 18-29. This is a special youth camp in which participants will share their life experiences in meaningful and transformative ways in the context of living high up in the mountains amidst a sustainable, spiritual community. The workshop includes hiking, group discussions, various spiritual practices, a Native American sweat-lodge and many other wonderful ways of being together and learning more about oneself.

The second is a chance to be a "summer steward." Summer stewards work with the community in all aspects of mountain life: cooking, building straw-bale solar structures, gardening and making community decisions. Additionally, stewards learn together about and practice various spiritual traditions. It is a real opportunity to step out of the frenetic pace of our lives, settle deeper into ourselves and participate in building a sustainable community. Summer stewards can be at Lama for various time periods throughout the summer. I believe there is a minimum two-week commitment. Most stewards stay at least a month.

Both opportunities are inexpensive and promise to be extremely fulfilling.

Lama is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Summers offer near-perfect weather, stunning views and healthy living.

Please write to Professor Nicholson (simon.nicholson@american.edu) for fliers announcing both programs. You can also check out the Lama Foundation website at: lamafoundation.org.

Professor Wapner, at AU, has taught classes at Lama for the past three years and would be happy to answer any questions you might have: pwapner@american.edu.

Foreign Agricultural Service Mock Interview: Oct. 14, 2008

****Breaking News: There are a couple slots available for SIS students to participate in a mock interview with the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service staff.

Please go here: https://american-csm.symplicity.com/students/ to sign up!

----------------------------------------

This e-mail serves as a reminder that the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) will be on campus tomorrow conducting mock interviews. Only a couple mock interview slots remain.

Tuesday, October 14th, a representative from FAS will be in the Career Center between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm, conducting half-hour mock interviews.

This mock interview event is part of the SPA Mock Interview Program, where real employers come to campus to ask you typical interview questions and provide constructive feedback, tips and advice. In addition to learning what to do, and what not to do, during an interview, it is also a great way for you to connect with an AU alum or recruiter. Sign up for one of the remaining 30-minute Mock Interview sessions through your AU Career Web account.

The Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) works to improve foreign market access for U.S. products, build new markets, improve the competitive position of U.S. agriculture in the global marketplace, and provide food aid and technical assistance to foreign countries. FAS has the primary responsibility for USDA’s international activities—market development, trade agreements and negotiations, and the collection and analysis of statistics and market information. It also administers USDA’s export credit guarantee and food aid programs, and helps increase income and food availability in developing nations by mobilizing expertise for agriculturally led economic growth. FAS also enhances U.S. agriculture’s competitiveness by providing linkages to global resources and international organizations.

Check out FAS and their opportunities on their website at www.fas.usda.gov

Again, please log into your AU CareerWeb Account to schedule a Mock Interview. Once in your account, click on "Upcoming Campus Interviews", and then choose one of the Mock Interview Sessions. If you have any trouble signing up for a mock interview, please contact Blair Ufer at ufer@american.edu.

Green Corps

A new academic year has dawned, and with it new opportunities for making
this world a better place.

During this academic year, Green Corps will select 35 soon-to-be college
graduates for our 2008-2009 training program. We give college graduates the
skills and experience they need to launch a career in the environmental
movement.

But Green Corps alumni - people like MoveOn.org's Adam Ruben - that tell our
story best. Click here to watch the video that tells the story of Green
Corps:

http://www.greencorps.org/about-us/15th-anniversary-video

Through our classroom instruction, field training and career placement,
Green Corps organizers become Green Corps alumni -- like Adam Ruben,
Bernadette Del Chiaro of Environment California, and more than 200 others.

As alumni, they work with environmental and social change groups such as
Sierra Club, Greenpeace and Rainforest Action Network.

And in their careers, they work on some of the biggest environmental
problems we're facing today.

If that sounds like something any of your students might be interested in
please take a moment to watch the video and feel free to share this email
with your colleagues and students.

Thank you and best of luck on a successful semester.
