MENTOR BIOS

Sam Henze received his Masters of the Arts in European Studies from AU in 2006, specializing in Defense and Security Issues. He studied abroad on the AU Brussels Program in Summer 2005, where he lived with the de Paul family and interned for Lockheed Martin. He spent his second year of grad school at Sciences-Po, Paris, where he learned all about French bureaucracy and the joys of Paris. Moving back to Brussels after graduation, he put his networking contacts to work and landed a job with LMI Government Consulting as their Brussels representative. He works on a US Army contract, support the Nato Army Armaments Group and working closely with the US Mission to Nato. He specializes in Trans-Atlantic defense industrial issues and at Nato has worked on the helicopter shortfall in Afghanistan, non-lethal capabilities and other armaments-related issues. In his spare time he enjoys cooking, eating, the outdoors and exploring Belgium, France and beyond with his Belgian wife and 6-month old baby girl. He would be happy to give AU students advice about any of the aforementioned topics.

Christina Sleszynska has dual French and US citizenship and graduated from the American University in 1988 with a Masters Degree in “European Integration”. After graduation, Christina moved to Paris where she worked for a few years in the arts and TV broadcasting fields. She moved to Brussels in 1991 where she worked for a number of European associations developing European wide projects in the audiovisual and cultural sectors and working on relevant EU policy developments. In 2003, she was appointed Manager of AER, a trade association representing the European commercial radio industry in Brussels . In October 2006, Christina joined the International Trademark Association (INTA) head-quartered in New York as INTA’s Europe Representative to help set up the Europe Representation Office in Brussels and develop INTA’s educational, policy and advocacy related activities in Europe . Nina Peacock graduated from AU in 2005 in International Relations with a minor in Economics. She studied abroad on the AU Brussels Program in Spring 2004, where she lived with the de Paul family and interned for the US Mission to the European Union. After working as an English language teaching assistant in France (2005-2006) and finishing her MSc in European Political Economy at the London School of Economics in 2007 on a Fulbright grant, Nina is working as a political consultant for Landmark Europe. She specializes in EU food and consumer policy, international trade, the obesity epidemic and food shortage crisis, advertising, sustainability, nutrition and eco-labelling, and biofuels. Her role includes everything from lobbying to public relations to writing quasi-think tank reports to putting together furniture from Ikea. Nina enjoys running, rock-wall climbing, jazz clubs, and salsa dancing in her free time. She would be happy to advise AU students on any of the aforementioned topics. Email: peacock_cs@yahoo.com

Jerome Spaans graduated from Ohio University in 1992 with a BA in Political Science with a concentration in Foreign Service. He studied abroad in Tours, France and in London. ograduated in June 1992. Jerome then pursued a Comparative and Regional Studies - Europe masters degree program at SIS at American University and graduated in 1996. His job experiences include: the Foreign and Commercial Service of the US Mission to the European Union, library and information science at the EPA in Washington, and the communications section of Directorate-General for Research of the European Commission (March 2004).
