Essay 1


Question 1
A series of protest actions was held recently in Washington DC. The protesters were trying to persuade President Obama to withdraw his support for something called the Keystone XL pipeline. This pipeline will carry oil gleaned from tar sands in Alberta, Canada, to Texas. Details about the project and the protests can be found here:

In your essay, I would like you to consider the following:
a) Are actions of this type an appropriate and meaningful response to the pipeline project? Please make an explicit case either for or against taking action, and then consider the merits of this particular form of action.
b) Setting aside your answer to part (a), what advice do you have for the protest organizers? What can the organizers do to make their actions more effective? What, in other words, is the best way to have President Obama withdraw support for the pipeline project?

Question 2
Rio+20 is scheduled for June 4-6, 2012. I would like you to write a policy memo for the US delegation. Your policy memo should:
a) Very briefly describe the history leading up to Rio+20
b) Identify and discuss the key issues slated to be discussed at the conference
c) For each of the key issues, articulate and defend a position that the United States should take

Your essays should be around 5 double-spaced pages in length.  See your syllabus for further essay guidelines. Remember, your essay should make a strong ARGUMENT; it should be carefully and completely REFERENCED; and it should show lots of evidence of deep, sustained ENGAGEMENT with the texts we’ve been using in class, and with other relevant sources.
